PACE, Fla. -- A Pensacola law firm says Pace Pharmacy is to blame for the overdose death of a local engineer in 2023. Now, Levin Papantonio has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the pharmacy and those arrested on behalf of 47-year-old Andrew Strickland. After Strickland suffered burns from a bonfire accident in January 2023, he became a patient of Dr. Elaine Sharp, who is now in custody on murder charges for an alleged pill mill scheme. Sharp prescribed Strickland morphine and diazepam.

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- With Marines on the ground amid the unrest in Los Angeles, more troops could be coming from Florida. Attorney General James Uthmeier recently said he's prepared to send Florida State Guard troops, if the federal government calls on them. California Governor Gavin Newsom rejected Governor Ron DeSantis' offer earlier this week. The Florida State Guard was reinstated by DeSantis to assist with state-specific emergencies.

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The University of West Florida is making it official. State Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr.'s contract was approved as interim president on Thursday. Diaz's annual salary is $643,000 -- over $100,000 more than former President Dr. Martha Saunders. ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- Officials with the Escambia County Utilities Authority (ECUA) say a major infrastructure project that's plagued residents for years is on track to be complete by the end of summer. ECUA is replacing nearly 6,000 ft. of force main along Scenic Highway. The project started in December. WEAR News has covered several spills along the construction route where neighbors say the problems have persisted for years.

MOLINO, Fla. -- The owners of a wildlife sanctuary in Molino are pleading for the public's help to find their rare wild cat. The "Sunset Wildlife Connection" in Molino is home to more than 70 animals. The owners say on Wednesday night there were obvious signs of vandalism to their "Geoffroy's cat" encounter and no signs of the animal. They believe someone either let the cat out or stole him from his exhibit.
