Will has a filly in this year’s Oaks named Bless the Broken. But his future was heading down a very different and scary path. This Friday, May 2, Will will saddle Bless the Broken in the biggest race of his training career.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) -Many jockeys get into the business because they grew up in it. Some aspiring jockeys are getting a very early start. That’s the case with the children of Brian Hernandez, Jr., who rode Thorpedo Anna to victory in the 2024 Kentucky Oaks. Hernandez became the eighth jockey to follow that up with the 2024 Kentucky Derby win on Mystic Dan. ”To win the Kentucky Derby, it just elevates things to a different level,” Hernandez said. Now, he’s also the one giving a leg up to riders.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Diana Heron was born and raised in Kentucky and started making hats after she was invited to her first Kentucky Derby. “In 2011 my son’s grandmother invited me to the Kentucky Derby. And I was freaking out, like, what am I going to wear?” Heron said. “So, I went to Dee’s Fabric store and I just started gathering everything that looked good together and crafted my own fascinator.”The final product turned out so well people at Churchill Downs stopped her.
