Charging homeless people for Out-of-Hours beds would be a “catastrophe”, says Waterford Helping the Homeless. The group was responding to a report by the Waterford News & Star last week that Waterford City and County Council were reviewing their policy on free access to out-of-hours beds at McGwire House. Following the publication of the report, the News & Star spoke to Waterford Helping the Homeless co-founder Susie Moran, who said being homeless is expensive enough.

A judge has refused to suspend the sentence of a ‘Born Again Christian’ man, who stole €115 from a staff member of a shop. Stephen Finn (38), of 166 St John's Park, Waterford, pleaded guilty to theft at a sitting of Waterford District Court before Judge Kevin Staunton. Sergeant Michael Hickey told the court that on March 14, 2023, gardaí were called to EuroGiant on Michael Street. The staff reported that a man had entered a back room from behind the counter.

The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) are hosting a whale watching event in Waterford. Whale Watch Ireland 2025 will take place on Saturday, May 17, between 5pm and 7pm, at Helvick Head. Those interested in taking part can meet at the High car park at 5pm. Whale Watch is in its 23rd year and coincides with National Biodiversity Week, which runs from May 16 to 25. There will be events like the Waterford at local headlands across the country.

Gardaí in Waterford City are urging car owners to be extra vigilant in parking and locking their cars after several break-ins. A number of vehicles were broken into and ransacked in the areas of Ballygunner, Grantstown and Williamstown on the night of May 5 into the morning. In total, there have been over 13 incidents in this area of the city. A spokesperson for An Garda Sióchana in Waterford said:"We are urging people to be extra vigilant when parking and locking their vehicles for the evening.
