Alabama jails more people per capita than every country in the world except El Salvador. With 898 inmates per 100,000 Alabama residents, the state has the sixth highest incarceration rate on the planet, according to a Prison Policy Initiative report published in June. “It is usually a mix of southern states kind of jockeying for those top few spots, and Alabama always does get up there, along with Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas,” said Wanda Bertram with the Prison Policy Initiative.

An environmental group says it will preserve 366 acres near the site of an old coal mine in west Jefferson County. The Freshwater Land Trust announced that Drummond Company has donated another 107 acres of a peninsula that sits where Mulberry Fork, Locust Fork and the Black Warrior River connect in the Black Warrior River basin. In 2016, the land trust filed a federal lawsuit against Drummond Company for polluting an abandoned coal mine.
