Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District is planning to start taking its chronically-truant students to court in an effort to boost attendance rates. The district, partly financed by its average daily attendance rates, reported between 6 and 7 percent of its students are chronically truant. Superintendent Ashley Chohlis said UCISD won’t pursue punitive measures in court but wants to see what resources families need to get students back at school.

Uvalde school trustees on Feb. 17 discussed but didn’t decide whether private schoolers should be permitted to participate in public school district sports. Wade Miller, head football coach and UCISD athletic director, told the newspaper on Feb. 19 that he is open to allowing private school students into the athletic program if the board and administration decides that’s what it wants.

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District students will have four-day school weeks with Friday or Monday off for about 25 of the 43 weeks between the first day of school Aug. 6 and last day May 28. Teachers will report for professional development for 17 of those student holidays. In the current school year, trustees allocated five days for professional development.
