The morning of Feb. 16 was the kind of frigid cold that makes most people stay curled up and cozy in bed. Despite the chill, a merry frenzy of volunteers was busy packing, carrying and delivering boxes of food and supplies to local families at the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh’s monthly food pantry. Around 30 volunteers participated in February’s food distribution, which served approximately 130 families in the greater Pittsburgh area.

A group of Pitt students on the Panther Racing Team built an electric car from scratch to compete in a Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Competition, unveiling it at an event in Benedum Hall on April 13. The Panther Racing team competes against 120 schools every year in an SAE competition, where students are in charge of building a small formula-style race car. Pitt’s team is headed by Executive Director Luc Chadam.

For low-income renters, Tenant Organizer at Northside Coalition for Fair Housing Jala Rucker said paying rent is sometimes a difficult situation, which is why she encourages students to petition for the right to counsel in case of eviction. “That’s the main focus of today for me, is the right to counsel, so tenants can have a legal aid to represent them right at the magistral level before it goes even further,” Rucker said.
