Students in a Carilion program are learning to provide better care for patients in our hometowns. “I’ve always been into health care, like I always wanted to help people make, you know, make people feel better,” said Tina Mayhew, program participant. They are taking part in the Grow Our Own Medical Assistant Certified Program.

It’s called the Career Quest 2 Go.It’s hosted by the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board. It starts in June and is open to those fourteen and fifteen years old. You will get paid for your experience. “We’ll look at construction. We’ll look at manufacturing. We’ll look at infrastructure. We’ll look at what it takes to run a business. So they’ll get lots of different exposures.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Registration is open for the latest youth boot camp. It’s a paid opportunity hosted by the Greater Roanoke Workforce Development Board. “What all it takes to run a city or town. We’re going to be looking at lots of different aspects: electricity, water, other utilities, construction, manufacturing, transportation,” said Toni McLawhorn, Business & Development Manager. It’s for those ages 16 to 24 who are not currently enrolled in school.

The new location of the Virginia Career Works Roanoke Center is the 707 building in Downtown Roanoke. “The main reason that we decided to move was to make our center more accessible to the public that we serve,” said Toni McLawhorn, Business & Development Manager. Even though it’s in a new location, the center still offers the same free services.
