Teenager Tianna Valvo is cramming a lot of experiences into her second chance at life, but one thing she won't do is head to the hairdresser. The 16-year-old, who is battling acute myeloid leukaemia, hasn't cut her hair since it grew back after months of gruelling chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. "I didn't actually cry when they told me [I had] cancer. It was really hard to contemplate that I was going to get really sick and come close to dying … it didn't feel real," she said.

Crowds were gathered bright and early outside the gates of Flemington Racecourse for the 2023 Melbourne Cup, in scenes reminiscent of the Boxing Day sales. Jeremy De Souza was in line early to beat the long queues outside the racecourse gates and secure a coveted shaded spot in the new grandstands. "Got here about 6:30am, so two hours before to stand here and ready for the run in a couple minutes time," he said.
