If we were to try to come up with a theme for Lancaster County’s top stories of 2024, as chosen by readers and newsroom staff, we’d have to say they fall into two buckets: either they’re stories of people or events that inspire, or they are stories that lift the lid off of some kind of scandal or controversy in our community.

Traffic across central Pennsylvania for the presidential campaigns seemed pretty light this year -- until a few weeks ago. Now, each day brings new national attention to the region, including Lancaster County. On Wednesday morning, FOX News Channel's "FOX & Friends" will broadcast live from the Brass Eagle Restaurant in Gap, as part of a series of stops in swing state diners.

“You realize you’re heading out into danger, right?” editor Michael Long told the team of journalists heading toward the building we’d just evacuated. It was about 1 p.m. last Saturday in a makeshift newsroom at Lancaster’s Southern Market, at Duke and Vine streets. Olivia Miller, Nathan Willison, Tom Lisi and Amber Ritson had raised their hands to get community reactions. Claudia Esbenshade, a Lancaster native and 38-year journalist, fought back tears.
