    LINCOLN — When all was said and done on the first day of Class B state tennis … it really wasn’t quite said and done for Coach Josh Miller’s York Duke girls. “Two are in (the medal round Friday) “for sure,” he said of his No. 2 doubles tandem, senior Elle Malleck and freshman Hayley Mattox. “The rest are done.”Malleck and Mattox, whom Miller described as a well knit together tandem when playing together, won their first two matches. Their third bout on Thursday was pending at press deadline.

    Perhaps the kids had a little more “pizzazz” Monday, and why not, after all it was the 50th anniversary of York Middle School’s “Almost Anything Goes Day.”It’s a sure thing Principal Kenny Loosvelt was in a proper festive spirit as he bounced around cheering on all the bright-faced young ‘uns. On the final full day of school, students and teachers alike were all a-giggle as the kids rotated from one silly game station to the next.

    ORD — This was much more than a volleyball match. This was a once-in-history event for the tiny Valley County village of Ord. The Huskers defeated the game-but-out-gunned South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Saturday in four exhibition sets 25-18, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19. Nebraska’s rotating lineup hit at a .317 pace while holding the Jacks to .015. The Jacks, though, were anything but a patsy opponent for Nebraska.

Humans, too, are welcome to check out this nearby, diverse habitat. The public is invited to an outdoor adventure sponsored by the Upper Big Blue NRD on Saturday, May 3 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the site.
