The U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned the extortion conviction of Dixie County lawyer Marion Michael O'Steen. O'Steen was accused of extorting money from a client while involved in an FBI investigation into former State Attorney Jeff Siegmeister. The appeals court found insufficient evidence to support the extortion charge or a charge of failing to report cash transactions. Siegmeister pleaded guilty to corruption charges in 2022 and was sentenced to 40 months in prison.

A Jacksonville man could face prison time over charges that he threatened a Secret Service agent investigating a report that he talked about killing former Vice President Kamala Harris on TikTok. Franklin Delana Jarrell, 59, was indicted Thursday on four counts of making threats to a federal law enforcement officer, a charge that can carry a potential six-year sentence behind bars.

A Jacksonville Beach man is facing federal arson charges over a fire in the Osceola National Forest that a federal agent said the man insisted he was free to start. Justin Sorci, 41, was indicted last week, days after a run-in with a U.S. Forest Service officer who reported Sorci had described himself as a “sovereign citizen” who “was able to do his own burn” in a part of the 260,000-acre forest within Baker County.

Another figure in a crackdown on Jacksonville internet café operators has been jailed on charges that accuse him of a role in a chain of illegal gambling outlets. Derek Fleming, 73, surrendered himself at the Police Memorial Building Sunday evening to face charges of racketeering, conspiracy, conducting an unlawful lottery, keeping a gambling house and possessing a slot machine. He was being held Tuesday on $607,015 bond.
