Saying he wanted to focus on some private health matters in his family, Springfield Fire Chief Ed Canny announced April 15 that he would be retiring next month, capping a 28-year career with the department. Canny, in conjunction with Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher, who appointed Canny to the top spot in 2023, said he would step away May 16. Canny's departure comes less than a week after Springfield Police Chief Ken Scarlette announced his retirement. His last day is May 30.
