Over the last 48 hours, there’s been no little confusion generated in Washington as to what they are demanding of Tehran, regarding their nuclear technology program. On April 12, both sides agreed they had a good start in the discussion, and Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Special Envoy to the Middle East, had said that Washington would be satisfied with a cap on Iran’s nuclear enrichment and would not require the dismantling of its nuclear facilities.

While much of the media is focussed on the absurd, ‘who will win the trade wars,’ the actual physical economy, and producers are taking big hits. Any strategy which bankrupts or cripples producers is unlikely to generate a trade surplus.

China’s National Statistics Bureau reported GDP growth at 5.4% “in the first quarter.” Since China reports GDP differently from Europe or America, note that this figure is for reported one-year GDP growth from the first quarter 2024 to the first quarter 2025. (At the same time, the NSB reported growth of 1.2% from the fourth quarter 2024 to the first quarter 2025.) The reported figures were considerably above estimates from ever-hopeful bank economists.

According to a report on the shipping industry tracking site Vizion, there has been a “sudden April crash in bookings” for trade with the United States. The disappearance of bookings occurred in the first week of April, in comparison to those of the last week of March.

Yesterday, Ukraine’s acting president, Volodymyr Zelensky on CBS News had appealed for the U.S. to make available, for purchase or lease, up to 10 Patriot air defense systems. He added that he has some European backers who have offered to help with the money.
