Airline passengers in Midland increased by nearly 11% this fiscal year

The number of airline passengers flying out of Midland International Air and Space Port has increased by 10.89% halfway through the fiscal year. Airport officials reported the number of passengers flying Southwest Airlines, American Eagle and United climbed to 60,482 in March. That total is 8.1% higher than March 2023. The fiscal-year-to-date total jumped to 346,451 six months into fiscal year 2024.
Midland police help recover nearly $280k in stolen property

Midland Police recently helped recover nearly $280,000 in stolen property that included multiple vehicles, ATVs, generators and a drone. The recovery of property followed MPD receiving information from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office and executing a search warrant in the 3200 block of Franklin Avenue. It was there that an MPD detective from the Auto Theft Unit recognized several additional items on the property he knew to have been reported as stolen.

I am a Midland man. Being from Midland is a source of pride. It doesn’t matter how many Bloomberg articles indicate otherwise. (By the way, when is Bloomberg coming back to give credit where credit is due? I am not holding my breath). Midland’s exceptionalism goes beyond what can be written in one article any way. An industry that matters. The Permian Strategic Partnership, Diamondback Energy, Pioneer Natural Resources, ConocoPhillips (still hard not to write “Concho”) – the list goes on and on.
NWS: 2023 to be one of warmest years in Midland history

2023 will be one of the warmest years in Midland’s recorded history. The National Weather Service reports that the average temperature will fall around 67.0 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees above the normal annual temperature and will tie 2023 for the third warmest year on record. The warmest year took place in 2017 (a 67.4-degree average), followed by 2016 (67.3 degrees), 2012 (67.0 degrees), 2011 (66.6 degrees) and 2020 (66.5 degrees).
NWS: 2023 set to be seventh driest in Midland history

2023 will finish as one of the driest years in Midland’s history. The National Weather Service reported that 7.53 inches of rain has fallen this year at Midland International Airport through Monday, which was 5.87 inches below normal through Dec. 25 and well behind Midland’s yearly average (13.51 inches). If no more rain falls in Midland this year – and there is none in the forecast – then 2023 will go down as the seventh driest in Midland history and the second driest year since 2000.
Midland debt payment surpasses $1.25 billion in FY 2023

The combined total debt payments of Midland’s five taxing entities grew in fiscal year 2023 to $1.252 billion, according to the Texas Bond Review Board. The slight growth from $1.214 billion was primarily because of around $30 million more in debt from the City of Midland, the largest owner of debt among the five taxing entities – the City of Midland, Midland County Hospital District, Midland ISD, Midland College and Midland County – at least for one more year.
Officials say Zoo Midland will open in 2027

This week he is providing some last thoughts about his time at the newspaper and in Midland. -- I will become the Strategic Communications Officer for the city of Midland beginning Jan. 2. I’m very excited to make the move, but not because I am leaving the only company I have known since my arrival in Midland -- almost 29 years to the day. The Midland Reporter-Telegram always will be a special place to me.
