KMID-TV (Odessa, TX )

KMID-TV first began broadcasting on December 18, 1953, making it the oldest television station in the Midland/Odessa area. In 2000, the station was purchased by Nexstar Broadcasting, its current owner. For a significant period, KMID was popularly known as “Big 2,” but in early 2004, it rebranded itself as “ABC2.” Despite this change, many residents in the Permian Basin continued to refer to it as “Big 2,” leading to the revival of that nickname in 2009. However, on December 12, 2015, the station transitioned again, adopting the name “Local 2.” On April 24, 2013, the Communications Corporation of America announced it would sell its group of stations to Nexstar. KPEJ was initially set to be sold to Mission Broadcasting. However, on June 6, 2014, Nexstar decided to sell KPEJ-TV to Marshall Broadcasting, a new minority-owned company, for $58.5 million. Nexstar would continue to manage KPEJ through a shared services agreement, creating a virtual duopoly with KMID. The transaction was finalized on January 1, 2015.
