A Wairarapa Hospital clinical leader says resourcing pressures meant the emergency department [ED] “effectively closed” for a time earlier this week, although a Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand [HNZ] spokesperson has assured the Times-Age that patient care is a top priority for the organisation. Norman Gray, the clinical head of Wairarapa Hospital ED, said while the doors of the ED had remained open earlier this week, there were no beds in the hospital for patients from the ED to be admitted to.

The number of recorded crashes so far this year on SH2 in Wairarapa is low, but data could be incomplete. Data obtained from NZTA Waka Kotahi by the Times-Age show one minor crash on SH2 between Featherston and Masterton in the transport agency’s system between January 1 and March 31 this year. The number reflects the information in its database as of April 17. A NZTA spokesperson said some incidents might not have been entered into the system yet.

South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] has celebrated the reopening of Hinekura Rd with residents. The event, which followed the road reopening after many months, was held at Hinakura Hall last week and was attended by SWDC representatives and residents, with an informal ceremony followed by a barbecue hosted by the East Coast Rural Support Trust.

In a welcome boost to the local economy, visitor numbers for February are well up on the same period last year. Recent figures provided by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment show visitor numbers for the month were almost 10 per cent higher than in February 2023. Regional tourist organisation Destination Wairarapa confirmed the recent data shows guest nights were up 9.9 per cent in February compared to the same month last year.
