Federal nuke fuel transport plan could include Bellows Falls

VERNON — A consultant hired by the U.S. Department of Energy has come up with preliminary plans for moving the spent nuclear fuel currently stored at the Vermont Yankee site in Vernon to an interim federal depository, and two of the plans include trucking the highly radioactive waste to Bellows Falls so it can be more easily loaded onto rail cars.
Judge allows Piri to attend suppression hearing remotely

BRATTLEBORO — A Florida doctor charged with the Vermont road-rage murder of a truck driver will be allowed to attend an upcoming suppression hearing remotely. The attorneys for Dr. Joszef Piri of Naples, Fla., are challenging the legality of search and the arrest warrants in the murder case, which were granted by Windham Superior Court Judge John Treadwell. As a result, a second judge, Elizabeth Mann, has been hearing the issue and she granted Piri's request on Wednesday after a brief hearing.
Flag policy continues to generate controversy

BELLOWS FALLS — The proposed town flag policy, based on one developed by the Vermont League of Cities and Towns, continues to generate controversy. And on Tuesday night at the Rockingham Select Board meeting, it generated threats, which some said after the meeting they interpreted as homophobic.
Dirver in Putney crash held without bail

BRATTLEBORO — A 23-year-old New Hampshire man accused of hitting and critically injuring an elderly Putney woman with his car on Thursday was ordered held without bail Friday. Windham Superior Court Judge John Treadwell ordered Jason A. Ball, 23, of Alstead, N.H., held without bail, as Treadwell cited his long record in New Hampshire of ignoring motor vehicle conditions placed on his license.
Elderly pedestrian airlifted after being hit in Putney

PUTNEY — An elderly Putney woman, out for an afternoon walk with a friend, was injured Thursday after a Jeep struck her as she was on the sidewalk near the front of the Putney Food Coop on Route 5. The woman, who uses a red and black walker, was airlifted to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, Putney fire/rescue officials said. Weather around Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center made flying its medical helicopter difficult Thursday afternoon.

Rockingham seeks photographer to document its cemeteries

BELLOWS FALLS — The Rockingham Cemetery Committee wants to hire a professional photographer to document the town's five historic cemeteries, and all the thousands of different memorials in them. Anne Manner-McLarty, who chairs the committee, said recently that the request for proposals includes documentation of all 5,100 memorials, five photographs of each from different angles. The town is following guidelines from the National Park Service.

Bacon chosen for new WNESU nutrition director

WESTMINSTER — Melissa Bacon, a protege of Harley Sterling, the departed and much lauded director of Windham Northeast Supervisory Union's award-winning school nutrition program, has been chosen to succeed him. Bacon's selection was announced recently by Superintendent Andrew Haas, after a search. The Westminster resident had worked closely with Sterling for nine years, dating back to his time at the Westminster Center School.
