BELLOWS FALLS — No shots were fired like in Lexington and Concord 250 years ago, but more than 400 people took peacefully to the streets of Bellows Falls Saturday at noon to protest the Trump administration's attacks on democracy. A light rain fell, as it had two weeks ago when a smaller crowd turned out in protest.

BELLOWS FALLS — The Sacred Heart Church and its rectory, the longtime spiritual home for the area's Polish Catholics who had built their own house of worship more than 100 years ago, is for sale. The 1910 church closed a number of years ago, and parishioners joined the nearby St. Charles Catholic Church, which is located a short distance away, also on Green Street. Since losing its elderly priest to retirement, the church at 37 and 39 Green Street has been largely unused.

The Select Board took a look at the proposed flag policy Tuesday night, and sent it back to the town attorney for more adjustments. The board will vote to either adopt or reject it in two weeks, according to Town Manager Scott Pickup.

Bellows Falls teen rescued after 30 foot fall on Fall Mountain

NORTH WALPOLE, N.H. — An 18-year-old from Bellows Falls, Vt., was rescued by helicopter Tuesday night after he fell 30 feet near the Table Rock overlook on Fall Mountain, seriously injuring his leg. The rescue of the hiker from the popular hiking area, which is also known as Mount Kilburn, took a large four-hour response from area emergency responders, and ended with him being hoisted off the mountain by a New Hampshire Army National Guard helicopter.
Grafton Village Cheese sold to South Woodstock cheese company

GRAFTON — The Windham Foundation has sold its award-winning Grafton Village Cheese Company to the South Woodstock-based Vermont Farmstead Cheese Co.The sale was completed on Monday, according to Kent Underwood, the president and chief executive officer of Vermont Farmstead, and now Grafton Village Cheese as well. Financial terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Freight train locomotive catches fire in downtown Bellows Falls

BELLOWS FALLS — The locomotive of a freight train from Berkshire & Eastern Railroad caught fire Monday night as it was approaching downtown Bellows Falls. Bellows Falls Village Fire Chief Shaun McGinnis said Tuesday that damage was limited to the locomotive and no one was hurt, but the fire created a large response from area fire departments to tackle the flames shooting out of the train engine. The fire chief said that the alternator on the locomotive caught fire.

BELLOWS FALLS — U.S. Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., said it's clear the President Trump and House Republicans are on a path to make massive cuts in Medicaid, despite what they say. Balint said the size of the cuts in the federal budget — $880 billion — could only come from Medicaid, despite assertions by House Speaker Michael Johnson that Medicaid would not be cut.
