This year’s Romeo Garden Walk on June 28 will feature plenty of foliage from hostas to roses and everything in between, but the 10 beautiful gardens on the tour are also intertwined with history. On 33 Mile Road, Charles and Yolanda Turner just planted their soybeans on their 200-acre farm mid-June. Their “Folly Farm” property has been part of Romeo home tours and barn tours, but this is the first time it has been included in the Romeo Garden Walk in a long, long time.

The Eastpointe City Council voted 3-2 to deny a special land use permit request from Common Citizen marijuana dispensary Tuesday night after a lengthy discussion. Mayor Michael Klinefelt and Councilwoman Margaret Podsiadlik were the dissenting votes. The recommendation from the planning commission was to deny the special land use permit.

The popular Eastpointe Summer Concert Series kicks off June 26, 6 p.m. at Spindler Park with the Shamrock Jazz Orchestra. This year, the six concerts will be held at four different venues: Spindler Park, Eastpointe City Hall, Kennedy Park and the Eastpointe Memorial Library. “We are doing the different locations this year because RARE does its Rockin’ Summer Night and we are partnering with them on that,” said Eastpointe Economic Development Director Ian McCain.

St. Clair Shores will replace its 24-year-old garbage truck with a new $260,700 McNeilus model that will be used at social districts and other special events in the city. Department of Public Works Director Bryan Babcock said purchase of the new vehicle was budgeted and funding will come from the rubbish department fund. “We currently have a 2001 model truck that is not a reliable truck,” Babcock said.
