Glenmore Campsite (Image: unknown) Camping in Scotland, particularly during the summer months, isn’t for the lily-livered. If you are timid about biting, blood-thirsty beasties – or crave a long list of creature comforts – it is likely a prospect that ranks highly within your own equivalent of Dante’s circles of hell. It’s a reminder of Glasgow’s hidden underbelly and its all-too-quickly forgotten past. It opened in 1896 as part of the Glasgow Central Railway line. But as passengers gravitated toward cleaner, more convenient street trams, the station closed in 1939.

The Birks of Aberfeldy (Image: Getty) My favourite place from author Heather Darwent Where is it? The area around Aberfeldy, Perthshire. Why do you go there? There’s so much to do in this part of Scotland and ever since I first visited about 10 years ago, I’ve been going back regularly. Though I know logically I should explore more of the country, I’m always drawn there as my first choice for a short break.
