The abandoned railway station in Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Why do you go there? I find it fascinating that something so big could be so easily hidden and so little-known by people who have lived in the city for years. It’s a reminder of Glasgow’s hidden underbelly and its all-too-quickly forgotten past. It opened in 1896 as part of the Glasgow Central Railway line. But as passengers gravitated toward cleaner, more convenient street trams, the station closed in 1939.

The Birks of Aberfeldy (Image: Getty) My favourite place from author Heather Darwent Where is it? The area around Aberfeldy, Perthshire. Why do you go there? Slate mining was once its lifeblood, but the industry went into decline following a mighty winter storm in 1881 that caused widespread flood damage.

Princes Street (Image: free) It’s funny how memory can play tricks on the mind. There are moments, as I walk along Princes Street in Edinburgh on a weekday morning, that I see glimpses of the past, like frames from a film. A place that feels achingly familiar yet, at the same time, a far cry from the eminent and bustling thoroughfare I remember.
