Recreating on canvas all four sides of the courthouse square in Burnet, circa 1900, took months of research and collaboration. Artist Ronda Hostetter took inspiration from old black-and-white photos, newspaper articles, and the stories of longtime residents to produce a set of impressionist paintings of the city’s downtown. All seven of the Project 1900 paintings will soon hang in the conference room of a building called Courthouse Square at the corner of Jackson and Pierce streets.

The Authors Guild’s first-ever Champion of Writers Award was presented to fired Kingsland librarian Suzette Baker during a recent gala in New York City. The honor was established to recognize librarians who fight against book bans. Baker was fired in March 2022 from her job as head librarian of the Kingsland Branch Library, one of three libraries in the Llano County Library System.

Two hours after hearing that a fire at Motel 6 in Marble Falls on June 16 had displaced 65 people, the Highland Lakes Crisis Network had transformed the middle school into a shelter. The organization’s quick efforts also included a volunteer shuttle service to transport people from the motel. “We had 40 cots ready to go, food on its way, and volunteers signed up to work shifts over the next few days,” said HLCN Executive Director Kevin Naumann. “We got a lot of (volunteers) out of bed.

The upcoming Juneteenth celebration at St. Frederick Baptist Church in Marble Falls has a double purpose. Along with celebrating freedom, the church is forming a committee to take the 2025 party back to Johnson Park, where there’s more room for activities, community participation, and barbecue. The June 22 celebration is from noon to 4 p.m. at St. Frederick’s, 301 Avenue N in Marble Falls. Meat will be provided; just bring a side dish for a free potluck meal.

The walls are rising on the Black History Museum at St. Frederick Baptist Church in Marble Falls. A crew of 13 carpenters from Cecil Jackson Construction began the framing on Wednesday, June 12, and are expected to finish by Saturday. Jackson decided to provide the labor free of charge after hearing about the project on KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune.
