Teressa Raiford founded the nonprofit Don’t Shoot PDX, motivated to make a change after her nephew was shot and killed in 2010. Their art events focus on providing mental health support in the aftermath of tragedy, which Raiford said is vital to stopping the cycle of violence.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The daughter of the man shot near the Islamic School of Portland shared details on what led up to the altercation on Southwest Capitol Highway. Amineh Zakarneh said Saturday that her father, Michael David Zakarneh, is still in the hospital and recovering from the gunshot wound. She said the violent incident is shocking to the Muslim community of Portland and is not at all a representation of their beliefs.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A mother is still searching for answers nearly nine years after her son was shot and killed in downtown Portland. Dion Matthews Jr. was gunned down on the night of Oct. 18, 2015, following a concert at Dante's, a music venue located off Southwest 3rd Avenue and Burnside Street. Portland police reported that witnesses saw people fleeing the area and vehicles speeding away from the parking lot — yet almost a decade later, detectives have made little progress in the case.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The city of Portland is requesting the removal of a centuries-old white oak tree, asking the homeowners to pay for the removal. The historic tree, known for its stature, has been identified for removal due to a fungus at its base. The cost to remove it could exceed $20,000. Patrick and Megann McGill purchased their North Portland home four years ago, falling in love with the expansive tree in their front yard.
