Height gave Francis Onapito Ekomoloit a commanding presence in life. He was a giant of physique and brain power. Fondly called Ona, he had eclipsed his cohort at Makerere University and, in 1991, won the coveted Best Journalism Student award then sponsored by Spear Motors Ltd, a local Mercedes Benz franchise. An indomitable spirit combined with the duality of brilliance and luck illuminated for Ona a career path brighter than for most peers.

The United States Mission in Uganda on Wednesday excluded Ugandan ministers invited for the country’s 248th Independence celebrations, from speaking at the well-attended function. Instead, State Minister for International Affairs Henry Okello Oryem- and other top government officials who were in attendance, looked on at the dais backgrounded against the animated US flag, also called the Star-Spangled Banner, as 36-year-old Jamila Mayanja spoke on behalf of the “Ugandan people”.

President Museveni has tapped Mr Edward Akol, a certified public accountant, as the next Auditor General (AG), replacing long-serving John F S Muwanga, this publication can reveal. Although Senior Presidential Press Secretary Sandor Walusimbi said he was “unaware” of the appointment, State House sources said Mr Akol’s name has been sent to Parliament for vetting.

Parliament, which has hastily been reconvened from an abrupt one-month recess proclaimed a fortnight ago, will tomorrow reconsider the Appropriation Bill after President Museveni withheld his signature and returned it. Looked at cursorily, it’s a procedural matter since the law allows it and this is not the first – and unlikely the last - time that the country’s chief political executive asks the Parliament to redo its legislative work.

The Military Police have started a countrywide crackdown on soldiers and imposters who breach traffic rules or bully police officers on roads, this newspaper can reveal. High-placed sources said the operation followed an order last Sunday in a radio message by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
