The official record shows William Byron finished third on Sunday (Oct. 6) at Talladega Superspeedway and Christopher Bell was sixth. In a race that usually amounts to a demolition derby, and Sunday (Oct. 6) was that, taking a chance is not worth it if you’re in a position to advance by way of points to the next round of the playoffs. The goal for these drivers is not so much to win, but rather to survive. Both did that by probably not forcing the issue. But what if this was not a postseason race?

Valvoline will remain a sponsor of Hendrick Motorsports through at least 2029, Hendrick announced June 26. The team extended its partnership with the longtime NASCAR sponsor with an expanded docket of primary sponsorships in 2024 plus multiple events from 2025-29. In all, Valvoline will sponsor William Byron‘s No. 24 in the NASCAR Cup Series for eight races in 2024. It’ll also sponsor the No. 24 in six races a year through 2029.

With Ryan Blaney and the No. 12 Team Penske’s first season win Sunday at Iowa Speedway, the defending 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champions finally closed the door on a complete race this season. From finishing second to Daniel Suarez in Atlanta in the closest three-wide NASCAR Cup Series finish ever, to inexplicably running out of fuel at World Wide Technology Raceway two weeks ago, it has been a bit of a drag for the team.

Ryan Blaney was not concerned about being the first Cup Series driver to win a championship with a second-place finish in NASCAR’s current playoff series format. Blaney won the 2023 Cup Series title on Sunday at Phoenix as he crossed the finish line behind Ross Chastain but ahead of fellow championship contenders Kyle Larson and William Byron. Since NASCAR instituted its winner-take-all playoff finale in 2014, every driver who won the title had also won the final race.
