Queensland's attorney-general has failed to appeal the sentences handed to two teenagers who attacked former rugby great Toutai Kefu and his family during a home invasion. Last year the two boys, who were aged 15 at the time of the incident, were sentenced over the 2021 break-in at Coorparoo, after pleading guilty to several offences including multiple counts of malicious acts with intent. They were both given less than 10 years in detention, and had no convictions recorded.

The teenager who killed south-east Queensland woman Emma Lovell during a home invasion has appealed his 14-year sentence, arguing it was manifestly excessive. In 2022, two boys — then 17 years old — broke into her North Lakes home late on Boxing Day night. During a struggle with Ms Lovell and her husband Lee, who had been trying to push the teenagers out of their house, the 41-year-old was stabbed in the chest and died on her front lawn. Mr Lovell was also seriously wounded.

A Sunshine Coast teenager has told a jury he stabbed his stepfather repeatedly because he was trying to "break free" from his "bear hug". The now 18-year-old, who cannot be identified as he was 16 at the time, pleaded not guilty to murder last week. A Supreme Court jury has already heard the teenager admits he caused his stepfather's death but had been acting in self-defence at the time of the 2022 stabbing.

A Sunshine Coast teenager who stabbed his stepfather 35 times allegedly told his mother he "shanked him" because "he deserved it", a jury has heard. The then 16-year-old boy, who cannot be identified under Queensland's youth justice laws, pleaded not guilty to murder in the Supreme Court in Brisbane on Monday. At the beginning of her opening address, crown prosecutor Rebecca Marks showed the jury the 23-centimetre folding knife the teen used to inflict the stab wounds to the man.
