    A coroner has determined a Gold Coast woman's former partner was responsible for her death, after he accidentally shot her at his home six years ago. Ivona Jovanovic was wounded in the chest at the Highland Park home of Christos Panagakos in September 2019 and later died from her injuries in hospital. The 27-year-old's death was the subject of a coronial inquest held last year which probed the circumstances of the evening in question.

    Three men have been sentenced to life in jail for a second time over the "cruel deaths" of two people who were locked inside a toolbox and dumped in a south-east Queensland dam. Last week, Trent Thrupp, Stou Daniels and Davy Taiao were again found guilty of the 2016 murders of Iulian Triscaru and Cory Breton. The trio were convicted by a different jury in 2021 of those charges as well as torture but were awarded a retrial on the more serious offences last year.

    A coroner has been tasked with "finding answers" for the families of three friends who were killed in remote Queensland more than 45 years ago. In October 1978, Karen Edwards, 23, Timothy Thomson, 31, and Gordon Twaddle, 22, were found shot dead in bushland at Spear Creek, near Mount Isa. At the time, the trio had been on a motorcycle trip together, travelling from Alice Springs to Melbourne. In 1980 a Coroner ruled they had been murdered by an unknown person or persons.

    A Queensland prisoner has taken her fight to have her eggs frozen while in custody to the state's highest court. Rachel Smith is currently serving a 10-year sentence after being convicted of drug trafficking and will be eligible for parole in 2029. In 2024, when Smith was aged 33, she attempted to apply to the chief executive of Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) to undergo a privately funded Oocyte cryopreservation procedure.

Five-year-old Barak Austral and three-year-old Jhulio Sariago drowned in the Ross River in Townsville in February 2019.
