Jeremy Anderson wants people to know there’s still a local place to get a haircut and a hot-lather neck shave in downtown Carrboro. On Monday, Anderson opened Main Street Barber Shop, an “old-fashioned barber shop” at 108 E. Main St. The space had been vacant since Friendly Barber Shop closed in April, leaving a lot of people looking for someplace to go, he said.

Chapel Hill homeowners could pay more property taxes to help the town “hold our ground” in a complex year, interim Town Manager Mary Jane Nirdlinger said Wednesday. It’s expected to be “an unpredictable next couple of years,” she said. But first, the Town Council wants a hard conversation about how much of an increase property owners can expect and what programs and services could be cut to reduce the impact.

The Orange County Board of Commissioners will consider a $311.9 million budget and whether to increase the property tax rate in May and June 2025. Some Orange County homeowners could pay higher property taxes next year to support schools and key county programs under a proposed budget released Tuesday. County Manager Travis Myren noted the current "environment of extreme uncertainty" in recommending his $311.9 million operating budget.
