Steven Mitchell collapsed in work from a stroke four weeks ago and has been rebuilding his strength step-by-step at Inverclyde Royal’s Larkfield Unit. “The whole room was spinning,” he recalled. “I went down onto the floor and then the tingling started in my arm.”He’s determined to get life back on track and is being helped to get there thanks to dogs Marcia and Billy. Once a week the charity Dogs For Good visit the ward to help stroke patients with their physiotherapy and cognitive responses.

Stroke patients in Greenock are getting help with their recovery from some four-legged friends. Once a week, the charity Dogs for Good visits Inverclyde Royal Hospital, supporting patients with physiotherapy and cognition through a series of obstacle courses and games. STV News visited the rehab ward to see the ‘paws-itive’ impact the eight-week pilot is having.

Just like any 18-year-old at this time of year, Jack is getting ready to leave high school behind. He was diagnosed with autism 14 years ago and goes to a specialist additional support needs school – but mum Angie now worries what his future will hold. She said: “It is a worrying time. Needle bins have been installed near the UK’s first drug consumption room in Glasgow after residents claimed the site had turned into a “dumping ground”. Residents of the city’s East End say their streets have been littered with waste in the months since the consumption room opened. People living in the Calton area gathered last month to discuss the impact on their streets in the five months since the Thistle Centre opened its doors.
