At a time when the future of “defund the police” advocacy in Oakland is in question, one of the Oakland Police Department’s most prominent critics is being rocked by internal disagreement. Last month, employees of the Anti Police-Terror Project, an organization that advocates for police accountability and justice for victims of police violence, sent a letter to APTP’s executive director Cat Brooks about their intention to unionize.

The 2024 election season is upon us, and a range of candidates—some running for reelection, others running for the first time—are vying for the five Oakland City Council seats up for grabs. The City Council seats open this year are District 1, District 3, District 5, District 7, and the at-large seat. July 31 was the deadline for candidates to file their campaign contributions with the city.
