OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A crowd gathered Friday night at the location where 5-year-old Dionicio Perez was found lifeless inside of an SUV after being left there for hours. Those who attended the gathering near 93rd Street and West Maple Road dressed in blue - Dionicio's favorite color. They brought candles, stuffed animals, and balloons to release in his honor. There was also a time of prayer.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Bringing the campus to the neighborhood is the goal of University of Nebraska Omaha's "North Omaha Initiative". The program created through the university's Black Studies department will offer four college courses to be taught by faculty at the Urban League of Nebraska. "You might take two courses [at the Urban League] and two or three courses on UNO's campus," said Dr. Cynthia Robinson, the UNO Black Studies Department Chair.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - For months, several people have been working across the state of Nebraska to gather signatures for several initiatives. One of those groups is Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana. "We're really in a position where we still need about 15,000 Nebraskans to come out and sign between now and Wednesday," said Crista Eggers of Nebraskans for Medical for Medical Marijuana.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Just hours after Tuesday's storm blew through the Minne Lusa neighborhood, those living there got right to work. "This morning our neighbors came out in force chainsaws they just materialized from nowhere and cut open the street," said Nancy Gaarde, president of Miller Park Minne Lusa Neighborhood Association. Not too far away was a quiet Miller Park with blocked entryways and a lot of debris.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -Together Omaha will close the doors of its homeless shelter that was once a hotel. It is set to close in October. Together bought the downtown Omaha hotel in 2022, following a pilot program. After some renovations, they opened the shelter up to those in the homeless population who are elderly and have serious health issues. Case workers have been staffed there to help residents transition into more permanent housing.
