Cass County Approves $460,000 Project

(Atlantic, IA) The Cass County Board of Supervisors approved multiple things today in their meeting and one of those was approving a bid for a reinforced box culvert project on 620th Street. The bid accepted was a total of $464,492. According to Cass County Engineer Trent Wolken, the project will be south of Atlantic and east of Lewis on 620th Street approximately a quarter mile south of Newport Road. Wolken believes that the project would start relatively soon after accepting the bid.

(Carroll, IA) Underwood baseball took down Unity Christian 3-1 in the 2A State Baseball Tournament quarterfinals. Unity Christian took the lead right out of the gate with a one-run lead in the top of the first inning. However, the lead didn’t last long as Underwood fired back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Sophomore Garrett Luett was the standout player for the Eagles in this contest and did everything he could to help his team win.
Underwood Baseball Heading Back to State

The Underwood Eagles are heading back to the state tournament after defeating Clarinda 3-0 last Tuesday. The Eagles took the lead early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Eagles added one more in the bottom of the third to lead 3-0 and win the game. Clarinda was held to zero runs for just the third time all season. The Hawkeye 10 champions were held to zero runs on four hits. Sophomore Garrett Luett threw all seven innings in the shutout and tallied 14 strikeouts on the season.
Bedford Upsets Tri-Center Advances to State Tournament

The Bedford Bulldogs currently sit with a record of 20-10 on the season and are preparing to play in the baseball state tournament in Carroll. The Bulldogs are heading into the tournament with nothing to lose and currently sit as the lowest seed of all eight teams. Bedford is coming off a 7-4 upset against the Tri-Center Trojans. Bedford fell behind early trailing 4-1 in the top of the third and tallied three runs to tie up the contest.

NEW YORK – FCS Football Central released Preseason All-America Teams and defensive lineman Finn Claypool was named to Second Team Defensive Lineman. Claypool was named the Pioneer Football League Defensive Player of the Year last season. The Des Moines native added All-PFL First Team and Academic All-PFL to is accolades a year ago.

(Lincoln, Neb.) Huskers add sophomore transfers Yuzu Miyoshi and Tiziana Rossini to women’s tennis team. Miyoshi will head to Lincoln after competing at No. 1 singles and doubles her freshman year at Sophia University in Japan. The Kawasaki, Kagawa, Japan, native was named 2022 player of the year and will head to Nebraska with three years of eligibility remaining. “The coaches and the teammates are a great fit for me, and Nebraska has the best tennis facilities,” Miyoshi said.

The county is trying to make EMS an essential service and has been in the process for nearly a year. (Harlan, IA) The Harlan Cyclones are coming off an 11-3 win against Carroll in the first round of tournament action. Harlan took the lead early with a two-run first inning and then piled on four in the third inning and five in the fourth inning, giving them an 11-2 lead through four innings. Junior Landen Kaufman was the lead catalyst for the Cyclones with a three-run home run in the fourth. In the fifth, junior Weston Reisz added three more with a base-clearing double.

(Audubon, IA) The Audubon Wheelers took down East Sac County 9-0 on Wednesday to stay alive and advance to the third round of tournament play. The Wheelers were fueled to victory by Riley Miller who threw seven shutout innings and 13 strikeouts. In the batter’s box, senior Mattie Nielsen added a home run for Audubon as the Wheelers scored four in the bottom of the second inning and kept piling on the pressure. Head coach Andrea Schwery thought they set the tone early.
Nebraska Earns Three Academic All-Americans

(Lincoln, Neb.) Three Husker track and field athletes were named Academic All-Americans per the College Sports Communicators. Till Steinforth and Tyus Wilson were named to the first team and Micaylon Moore earned second team. Steinforth posted a 3.90 GPA, Wilson posted a 3.95 GPA and Moore holds a 3.86 GPA. Steinforth was named 2024 Nebraska Male Athlete of the Year and 2024 Midwest Region Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
