SOUTH CHARLESTON — The first game of the WVSSAC Class AAA state softball tournament had it all. First came the rain delay, then extra innings, then Weir handing Frankfort its first loss of the season. The Red Riders’ Kylie Dean and Isabella Weber supplied eighth-inning RBI singles to lift Weir, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Little Creek Park’s The Rock. Eliza Utt got the win, scattering nine hits and four walks to allow just one run in an eight-inning complete-game performance.

The Wayne Pioneers have had a sour taste in their mouths since last year. Wayne’s girls basketball team was one game away from qualifying for the Class AAA state tournament final in 2024. However, the Pioneers were bounced by eventual champion Nitro in the semis. This year, Wayne reached the state semifinals again, and this time, it’s moving on.

When Elias Gregory took over the St. Albans girls basketball program in July, he had one thing in mind: reaching the Class AAAA state tournament. The Red Dragons have made one trip to the state tournament since 2010, and it came in 2017. St. Albans is 15-5 heading into the postseason and earned the No. 1 seed in Class AAAA Region 4. SA is the new team in the field because the Red Dragons and Capital switched regions.
