In the last installment of our occasional series to visit and share some of the coziest experiences in the Portland area, we headed to Gresham’s historic downtown district and The Scout Wine Bar. Opened in 2024, this wine bar looks and feels like the sitting room at your grandparents’ house, decorated with antiques and upcycled furniture, and well stocked with books and games. The bathroom is a charming detour to the dark side of Victoriana, complete with a cabinet of “dark academia” curiosities.

Portland’s The Wine Spa is one of Time Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places of 2025. This unusual bar — named after the ancient Egyptian game that has survived to this day — has funky vibes that invoke memories of playing Sorry or Battleship in your grandmother’s basement. That’s by design.

Portland has a long relationship with weird donuts. And that relationship continues to this day with Doe Donuts' seasonal creation: the spaghetti and garlic bread doughnut. “This month, we have a spaghetti doughnut that has a garlic topping,” owner Crystal Held said.
