From the outside, it’s just an old building in downtown San Diego. Nothing gives a clue about the offerings in the works inside, that this place will be a refuge for sex-trafficked teens. Here, teens can come get a bite to eat, charge their phone, get access to toiletries. There’s a comfy couch and big screen TV bathed in low light, and a quiet room to maybe close their eyes for a few minutes. They can even spend time with an on-site counselor if they like. The idea is to provide safety and services.

As concern mounts over dangerous maritime smuggling crossings, U.S. Rep. Mike Levin said this week that he plans to ask Congress for $60 million in federal funding to install surveillance towers along the San Diego coast. The move comes a week after three people died when a panga with 18 people aboard capsized off the coast of Del Mar. A 10-year-old girl also went missing and is presumed dead.

By Teri FigueroaThe San Diego Union-TribuneOCEANSIDE, Calif. — Oceanside police had already spotted the burglary suspect inside the strip mall early Friday morning. They knew he was in the building. Question was, where? The answer came after officers flew a drone between the ceiling tiles and the roof of the building, where they found their suspect feigning sleep before he partially fell through the tiles, Oceanside police said in a news release Friday.
