WESTMORLAND—Many buzzed with excitement at the 19th Annual Westmorland Honey Festival, held Saturday, Nov. 16, at Westmorland City Park. The event, which lasted six hours and took over three of the four streets surrounding the city park and city hall, was managed by the Imperial Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce. Vendors and information booths catered to those in attendance. With plenty of things for the community to see and do, ranging from local honey farmers to even non-local blood banks.

BRAWLEY — Education has continuously played a pivotal role in our communities. Through public education, private education, and charter schools, these learning institutions have been on the forefront of addressing issues such as parental rights, gaps in literacy and other subject matter, and school violence. In light of these important topics, The Desert Review interviewed the Brawley Union High School District Trustee Candidates. Brawley residents can vote for three.

BRAWLEY— Padilla-Pace Middle School held its ribbon cutting, Thursday, Aug. 22, commemorating the new school for the new year. Padilla-Pace is the first new school in over 60 years and is named after Jose Padilla, Sr. and Captain Scott Pace. Brawley Elementary School District Superintendent, Rauna Fox, stated that Padilla-Pace will service approximately 400-425 students from the sixth and seventh grades. “Students who live south of Main Street are in the Padilla-Pace attendance zone,” Fox said.

CALIPATRIA— The Calipatria City Council passed a proposal during a special council meeting, July 22, to place two measures on the November ballot. Mayor Pro-Tem Michael Luellen wrote the measures to establish the positions of Calipatria City clerk and City treasurer as appointed rather than elected. Since the City Clerk and City treasurer are elected every four years on alternating cycles this questioned what effect this would have on the city.
