BOSTON – Albania’s Orthodox Church recently elected Joan (Ioannis) Pelushi as its new leader. He succeeds the late Archbishop Anastasios, who had revived the church after the fall of communism in 1990. Archbishop Ioannis (69), worked at the Tirana Psychiatric Hospital until 1990, when the communist leadership collapsed. He studied in the United States at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline. In 1994 he returned to Albania and became a priest.

BOSTON – Ioannis Benelas, 74, passed away on the evening of Sunday, March 16, at Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, MA, where he had been hospitalized in recent days. The late Ioannis was one of the most melodious and distinguished chanters in Boston and Massachusetts in general. He was a student of the late Protopsaltis (Chief Cantor) of Thessaloniki, Harilaos Taliadoros, often chanting his musical compositions during church services at various parishes of the Metropolis of Boston.
