The National Herald

The National Herald

The National Herald is a weekly English-language newspaper that serves as the sister publication to Ethnikos Kirix, a Greek daily that has been in circulation since 1915. Established in 1997, The National Herald (TNH) was created to address the needs of Greek-Americans who primarily speak English. This initiative came about due to the growing demand from younger generations seeking news about their community and the Hellenic Diaspora, as well as updates from Greece and Cyprus—all in English. TNH focuses on delivering news, opinions, and feature articles that are particularly relevant to Greek-Americans. It is published weekly, with home delivery available on Saturdays in the New York Metropolitan area and mailed across the United States. Over the years, TNH has expanded significantly and has become the leading English-language newspaper for Greeks in North America. In addition to the print version, TNH’s website, along with its Greek language counterpart www.ekirikas.com, attracts thousands of subscribers from both the U.S. and around the globe each year. We aspire to be recognized as the primary Greek newspaper in North America and aim to establish our website as the go-to Greek online resource. Our modern, cutting-edge website allows readers to enjoy TNH from anywhere in the world while providing daily access to breaking news, thought-provoking opinions, new recipes, travel advice, and much more.

NEW YORK – When a half-dozen Montauk youngsters gather each Saturday to pore over story drafts, their red pens are doing more than tidying prose—they’re carrying forward a tradition of civic engagement that stretches back to the Athenian agora. What began as the brainchild of three eighth-grade friends has blossomed into The Ditch Weekly, a seasonal broadsheet produced by local teens who see their paper as a modern-day klepsydra—a timekeeper for community discourse.

You’ve seen the grim headlines announcing Greece’s burgeoning demographic crisis: one of Europe’s lowest fertility rates combined with the nation’s youth fleeing the country for greater economic prospects elsewhere spells the need for serious reform, and fast. Greece’s population dipped below 10 million for the first time since 1984 this past January. It’s not an exaggeration to say the country’s long-term future hangs in the balance if these trends continue.

The competition has a storied history, with humble beginnings dating back to the 1950s and later serving as a device for fostering Pan- European identity throughout the Cold War and in more recent years. It’s also never been more popular, drawing in 163 million television viewers in 2024 and another 81 million in unique YouTube views.
