It was supposed to be one of the most festive days of the summer. On Aug. 1, 1951, the Olmsted County Fair was scheduled to open, with all of its traditional sights, sounds, fun and food. Within hours, though, an explosion at a nearby oil company warehouse claimed two lives and caused storage tanks to erupt in fire. The resulting plume of black smoke cast a figurative and actual shadow over the fair.

Although she was blind, Helen Keller could see the storm clouds on the horizon. “World peace seems to be further off than ever just now,” Keller said in October 1937 in Rochester. Ever the optimist, she quickly added, “So often the darkness comes just before the dawn, and it might be that we are living through that darkest hour now.” Keller’s comments came in an interview with the Post-Bulletin at her Kahler Hotel suite.

Barbara Ann Richter, age 86, of Rochester, passed away peacefully on April 12th. Born on March 29, 1939, in Minneapolis, Barb was the beloved wife of Dale for almost 63 years, caring mother to Scott (Patty), Todd, and Troy (Jaralee), and grandmother to Cole, Jack, Chad, and Mark. Barb had a kind heart, always putting the needs of others before her own. This was felt by everyone, but most deeply by her family, for whom she was a constant source of unconditional love.

For Rochester, 1917 was the year the circus almost didn’t come to town. “The red wagons will come tomorrow,” the Rochester Daily Bulletin said on June 21, 1917. “That dear old institution, old but ever new, the circus comes to Rochester Saturday with a real show.” The traveling extravaganza heading for Rochester was the Carl Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus “a circus of novelties, thrills and a whole show of pretty women,” according to the newspaper.

Nein.
