Firefighters from Cutchogue and several other local departments battled a large structure fire at a farm on Alvah’s Lane Friday afternoon. The fire was called in at 2:43 p.m. and ultimately destroyed a mobile home and an adjacent barn, according to Southold Town Police Chief Steven Grattan. The fire was so intense that smoke and flames could be seen from Route 25 and even from some areas on the other side of Peconic Bay.

Over the past 30 years, the Wading River Duck Pond has gone from a sanctuary that flourished with ecological life to one that has languished due to unchecked pollutants, officials say. “It’s slowly diminished,” said Riverhead Councilman Ken Rothwell, who lives in Wading River. The main culprit: motor oil that has run off from roads. “There’s visible oil that runs off and is appearing in the ponds,” Mr. Rothwell said, adding that the water “comes down like a raging river” during heavy storms.

The Suffolk County Water Authority began work Monday on a major water main extension to bring public water to 64 homes in the Riverhead Town sections of Manorville and Calverton, taking them off private wells that have been shown to be contaminated by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. This project is Phase 2 of an ongoing effort to connect more homes to SCWA water, officials said.

The architectural firm hired to help design downtown Riverhead’s new Town Square and riverfront park unveiled plans and drawings at a public information meeting last Wednesday that met with both support and opposition. A second public information meeting was held July 17, after the News-Review went to press.

Riverhead Town took legal action last week against Scott’s Pointe — also known as Island Water Park — asking a state Supreme Court judge to shut the park down, force the owners to dismantle illegally built pickleball courts and a go-kart track, and fine the company at least $100,000, according to a complaint. Riverhead officials said at a Town Board meeting earlier this month that Island Water Park Corp.
