Topeka Sports Cabaret owner Leonard Rrapaj has been charged with illegal possession of a machine gun conversion device. The affidavit detailing the case is sealed due to an ongoing investigation involving the FBI, DEA and ATF. The case is part of the Department of Justice's Operation Take Back America. This case follows a similar one in Wichita where charges were dismissed on 2nd Amendment grounds, a decision currently under appeal.

Kayden M. Smith was charged with intentional second-degree murder on June 3, 2025, for the April 2022 death of Dustin Michael Clayton. Smith was initially arrested in May 2022 in connection with first-degree murder, but charges weren't filed at that time. Kayden M. Smith, suspected by Topeka police since 2022 of a homicide committed that year, was charged in the case June 3 by Shawnee County prosecutors.

Ian A. Mwaniki, 29, of Topeka, was fatally shot on June 3. The shooting occurred in the 700 block of SW Western Avenue. Mwaniki was Topeka's eighth homicide victim of the year. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Shawnee County Crime Stoppers. Ian A. Mwaniki, 29, of Topeka, was the man found fatally shot about 7:50 p.m. June 3 in the 700 block of SW Western Avenue, Topeka police revealed June 6. Mwaniki was pronounced deceased at the scene, said police Lt. Donna Eubanks.
