The city of Topeka is appealing a court ruling that awarded two female police administrators, Colleen Stuart and Jana Kizzar, over $400,000 in a discrimination lawsuit. Police Capt. Jennifer Cross, a co-plaintiff in the original suit, is also appealing the dismissal of her claim. The city of Topeka faces other pending discrimination lawsuits from current and former employees.

Cora, a 66-year-old Asian elephant residing at the Topeka Zoo, starred as "Charlotte" in the 1980 film "Smokey and the Bandit II."Participants in "The Bandit Run," a yearly tribute to the "Smokey and the Bandit" series, will visit Cora at the Topeka Zoo on June 9. Cora is one of the oldest elephants in the U.S. and has survived two serious health scares in recent years. "Smokey and the Bandit II" was the eighth-highest-grossing film of 1980.

Several notorious criminals with Kansas connections served time in Alcatraz, including Alvin Karpis, “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud. Donald Trump expressed interest in reopening Alcatraz prison to house hardened criminals. Alvin Karpis, raised in Topeka, was designated "Public Enemy No. 1" and spent 26 years in Alcatraz. Robert Stroud, the "Birdman of Alcatraz," became an ornithologist while in prison but was not allowed to keep birds at Alcatraz.

An endangered piping plover nesting at Webster State Park in Kansas has caused the swim beach to close until late June. The piping plover, a small migratory shorebird, is protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Kansas Nongame and Endangered Species Conservation Act. Visitors can observe the bird from a distance but are asked not to disturb it. The piping plover's sandy-colored feathers provide camouflage on beaches.

Yelp ranked the top 25 burger chains in the U.S., and Topeka is home to eight of them. The top three burger chains, In-N-Out Burger, Habit Burger Grill, and Shake Shack, do not have locations in Topeka. Culver's, Freddy's, Five Guys, Red Robin, McDonald's, Sonic Drive-In, Burger King, and Wendy's all have Topeka locations and made the Yelp list. Whataburger, ranked 14th, is expected to open a Topeka location soon.
