Nordhoff Junior High and High School’s new pool is on target to be finished in September. Ojai Unified trustees unanimously approved the sale of the remaining $13 million in Measure K bonds to finance the new Nordhoff aquatic center and stadium, among other projects, at their April 16 meeting. Voters approved a total of $45 million through Measure K in 2020.

Ojai Unified trustees mourned the passing of Ojai Unified School District “titan” Marilyn Smith from a stroke on March 25, announced at their April 16 board meeting. Smith, 78, was working as OUSD’s director of Special Projects and served on the leadership team, just two of her roles in education, including more than 50 years as an elementary and high school teacher, principal and administrator.

"Options for tenant protection measures" will be before Ventura City Council on Tuesday, April 8 following Council's direction last year to conduct public workshops on the topic. City staff held three in-person and two virtual meetings last fall, and presented public input from those meetings to the Ventura Planning Commission in February. A final meeting of the Housing and Homelessness Subcommittee was held last month.

Ventura City Council tackled future infrastructure projects, budget, priorities, and an updated land-use map at its March 25 meeting. It unanimously adopted a 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program, comprising 87 projects, ranging from sidewalk repairs and street resurfacing to a storm drain and wastewater repairs. In her motion to approve the Capital Improvement Program, Mayor Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios included the addition of Main Street bollards.

Hundreds of Venturans from all sides of the political spectrum overflowed Ventura City Council chambers March 18 to debate a policy that would, in essence, make Ventura a sanctuary city. In the end, the council voted unanimously on a motion by Councilmember Ryyn Schumacher directing city staff to work with him and Councilmember Liz Campos, who introduced the policy, to explore options and return with a revision before the end of April.

On Tuesday, March 18 Ventura City Council will consider adopting the Community Autonomy, Rights, and Equality (CARE) Policy, which seeks to shield locals from certain federal administration changes. Specifically, the CARE Policy aims "to protect reproductive rights, immigrant residents, gender-diverse individuals and all residents of the City of Ventura from restrictive laws and external enforcement efforts."Also on the agenda is a budget workshop, and revised Land Use Designation Map.
OUSD OKs housing feasibility contract

Ojai Unified School District trustees unanimously approved at its March 12 meeting a contract with Brookwood Partners to conduct a feasibility study for potential workforce-housing project configurations for its downtown Ojai Avenue property. Brookwood Partners was the top recommendation out of four respondents to a Request for Proposals. The firm will assess the property and conceptualize multiple options for workforce housing developments there.
