They ground out another victory in set two, with a score of 25-21 to take the math 2-0.

White County Warriors traveled to Chattanooga, on Aug. 16, 2024, to participate in a jamboree held at University of Tennessee Chattanooga’s Finley Stadium, where, after a lengthy rain delay, the Warriors finally were able to take the field. “Overall, it was a great experience for our kids to play tough competition and compete in a college football stadium,” Warriors’ head coach Curtis Beaty said. “It was a good thing for our team in our final game like preparation for the start of the season.

The White County High School cross country team competed in a jamboree, on Aug. 15, 2024, in Cookeville. Head coach Nathan Aaron said he was pleased with the performances at the pre-season practice race. “I was pleased with the effort of our runners. For some of them, it was their first time running a 5K,” Aaron said, noting the weather was not ideal, especially in the girls’ race, as it was hot and humid.

IT major Cognizant on Wednesday announced the appointment of Rajesh Varrier as global head of operations and India Chairman and Managing Director following the resignation of Rajesh Nambiar, who is set to take over as Nasscom president. Nasscom, in a separate release, announced the appointment of Nambiar as its president designate, succeeding Debjani Ghosh upon the completion of her term in November 2024.

Velma Ernestine McPeak Boyd, well known as half of the McPeak twins, age 97, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 18, 2024, at Life Care Center of Sparta. Ernestine was born July 16, 1927, in the Hickory Valley community, of White County, to John Christopher “J.C.” and Stella Davis McPeak. She was a retired shirt factory worker. She loved collecting salt and pepper shakers and had amassed a collection of over 14,000 sets in her years of collecting.

Kathleen Whitson Robinson, 81, of Sparta, passed away Aug. 16, 2024, at Alive Hospice Murfreesboro. Kathleen was born Jan. 28, 1943, in Sparta, to Estle and Lillian Adell Walker Whitson. She was a longtime Mallory employee until it closed and will be fondly remembered for her years of service at Walmart. The only thing she loved more than working was being Granny K to her family.

Jonelda Sparks Hutson, 88, passed away May 25, 2024, at her home. She was born July 21, 1935, in the Yankeetown community, of Sparta/White County. Jonelda graduated from White County High School, in 1953. She was employed by Sparta Electric System for 40 years and was the “boss” of Hutson’s Catering. Jonelda volunteered delivering meals for Sparta Senior Citizens and participated in several community groups: Sparta Jr. Woman’s Club, Sparta Jaycettes, and Baker and East Sparta PTO.

I have been asked several times about the railroad crossing on Highway 111 near Fred Hill Road. It is a very rough “crossing area” as you travel on that road traveling in both directions. The street under the rails has been upgraded and repaired several times. When that happens the rails also move as the ground problem worsens. That creates an issue when a car or truck travels over the rails. To the best of my knowledge, a train car has not traveled over that crossing since the year 2018.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for northeastern Kane County, including Campton Hills, St. Charles, Valley View, South Elgin and Elgin until 6:45 p.m. Wednesday. According to the NWS, a tornado was spotted near Campton Hills at 6:22 p.m., moving east at 40 mph. Residents in the path of the tornado are advised to take cover in the basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows.
