FAIRFIELD — The Solano County supervisors have scheduled a special closed session for Monday to discuss the employment of a county administrator. The board also has a regular meeting set for 9 a.m. Tuesday. The special closed session will be held at 1 p.m. No announcement is expected. Current Administrator Bill Emlen confirmed earlier this year his intention to retire sometime in 2025.

FAIRFIELD — Legislation that would allow qualified graduating high school seniors to be automatically placed into a California State University has cleared the state Senate. Senate Bill 640 also seeks to ease the ability of students to transfer from community colleges to CSUs "by requiring that a task force be convened to create five new pathways of study that would begin at community college and be completed at a CSU.

FAIRFIELD — Area fire agencies worked two wildfires in recent days, including a 49-acre fire that started in the early afternoon on Monday and threatened a number of Pleasants Valley Road residences. No homes burned. There were no injuries. "The fire started near the Cherry Glen extension road on the north side of I-80 in Vacaville and burned uphill to the north," the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in its incident summary. The initial call came in about 1:30.

FAIRFIELD — A heat advisory for Solano County has been put in place for Friday into Saturday, with a high temperature of 96 expected in Fairfield. "There is hot, and then there is hot," Ready.gov states. "Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two to three days. In extreme heat your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to death.

I am not sure my father would appreciate this column. It is not that he would have been overly upset; remembering a veteran is always worthy. However, he had definite ideas about what Memorial Day is supposed to mean. He insisted, correctly, it was a day to honor those military men and women who gave their lives in the line of duty. It is not for those who wore the uniform. They have their own day and can be saluted then.
