Wednesday, June 11 was the end of the line for Silver Airlines after it abruptly stopped all operations and left thousands of passengers stranded, including some in Tallahassee. In recent weeks, some landmark businesses on Tallahassee's North Monroe Street have disappeared. But that's expected to be a temporary situation. The Florida Department of Transportation pegs North Monroe Street's daily traffic volume well above 20,000 vehicles a day. That makes it a primary gateway to the Capital City, although Leon County Commissioner Rick Minor says that gateway has been less than a charming entrance.

Saturday's showers didn't keep people away from Tallahassee's Lemoyne Arts Open House. The event showcased the recent expansion and renovation of the gallery, garden and art education building. A local jazz trio provided the event's soundtrack. Meanwhile, Lemoyne Board President Dan Taylor credited a great outpouring of community financial support for all the positive changes. The final weekend of the 74th Annual Jefferson County Watermelon Festival is coming up. Event co-director Katie Truelove says it all kicks off this Friday afternoon. "We're going to have our Watermelon Jam, which we used to call our street dance. We'll have the Highway 59 Band with live music in the middle of our big festival field. All of that fun starts at 7 and the festival itself is open from 3 until 9 on Friday."The festival reaches its climax the following day.

The health care industry makes up a big part of Tallahassee's economy. But the city is still facing the same nursing shortage plaguing much of the state. The latest U.S. Census data reports health care is the third largest industry in Tallahassee, behind only educational services and public administration. As of 2023, the latest year for which numbers were available, just under 14 percent of the city's workforce - more than 14,000 people - were in medical and related fields. That's a lot of people.
