PEDESTRIANISATION of Oxford Street is to go ahead after the Mayor of London claimed the “vast majority” backed his scheme. Sir Sadiq Khan, who seized control of the overhaul from Westminster City Council, said the project will move ahead “as quickly as possible”. With a consultation done and dusted, a target date for January 1 has now been set for passing legislation so that an MDC – mayoral development corporation – can be set up to oversee the scheme.

Pastrick MaguireAN artist wrongly convicted of helping make IRA bombs – who was jailed in an adult prison aged 13 more than 50 years ago – is backing a campaign for urgent reform to protect the next generation of miscarriage of justice victims. Patrick Maguire – the youngest of a Kilburn family that became known as the “Maguire 7” – spoke to the New Journal this week on the urgent need to scrap legislation preventing innocent people from winning compensation claims.

How the latest plans for 100 Avenue Road lookONE of Camden’s longest-running planning sagas is back at the Town Hall tonight (Thursday) – and this time it’s even bigger. It is 12 years since the redevelopment of 100 Avenue Road in Swiss Cottage was first approved by planning chiefs. The 24-storey tower, social housing block and new home for the Winch Youth Centre was mothballed after years of legal tussling, planning appeal hearings and developer shenanigans.

The Taplow tower on the Chalcots EstateT is the stuff of claustrophobic nightmares. Imagine being trapped in a broken tower block lift 200 feet above ground for almost an hour – and then it starts to “jump and bounce”? The stranded estate tenant, a vulnerable man, captured a terrifying moment on a smartphone that shows the Taplow lift begin to judder before a loud bang. The lift’s emergency button did not work and a neighbour had to contact the fire brigade which came to free him.
