In the recent NFL draft, the only running backs taken in the first round joined a rivalry that dates to 1960 and the American Football Conference. Chargers and Raiders. So who will have the better rookie season – Ashton Jeanty, the former Boise State star drafted sixth overall by the Raiders, or Omarion Hampton, the North Carolina alum who went 22nd to the Chargers? Look for Jeanty to break more tackles. Even as a rookie, he’ll show more power, agility and creativity than most NFL running backs.

The revamped San Diego Wave will seek their fourth consecutive victory Saturday night, when they face the Portland Thorns in Mission Valley. A year after struggling to score, the Wave have become the National Women’s Soccer League’s top team in passes attempted, completion percentage and time of possession. Major League Baseball’s penalties for a failed drug test aren’t stern enough to adequately deter players’ use of banned performance-enhancing drugs, said a former World Series champion. Eric Hosmer, who retired after playing for the Royals, Padres, Red Sox and Cubs, said MLB ought to jack up the financial hit for a flunked PED test. The perceived baseball IQ of a big-league manager correlates to his bullpen. If the bullpen stinks, the manager is a dummy. If the bullpen shines, the manager is a genius. Meet Mike Shildt, baseball’s leading Einstein through the first fifth of the 2025 MLB season. Padres relievers went into Tuesday’s game at Yankee Stadium atop the big leagues in a dozen categories. The Padres took Major League Baseball’s second-best record (23-11) into Tuesday in large part because of the bullpen’s brilliance.

Five thoughts on Major League Soccer and first-year San Diego FC. 1.The regular season has far too many games, far too much travel and far too many international windows for any team to sustain a high level of soccer across the 34 matches. Soccer demands rare energy and fitness, or else a team’s quality sags. MLS fields are too big — wider by 17 to 27 yards than an NFL field — for a player’s tired legs not to show up. Two weeks ago, fatigue appeared to contribute to SDFC’s worst half of the season.

Toss out tonight’s outlier. Padres bullpen has been MLB’s best this season. I couldn’t find another Padres ‘pen with a 34-games start this good (and several Padres bullpens were very good). https://t.co/USdhGHY4ao

RT @SDUTKrasovic: The MLS season, travel is too busy, reducing soccer quality. In fairness, that's true of many sports leagues. San Diego F…
