Rory McIlroy didn’t monopolize all of last week’s golf fun. In San Diego, a golfer shot his age or better — for the 1,500th time. Mike Barber, who holds the Guinness world golf record for shooting equal to or below one’s age, reached the 1,500 milestone at The Heights Golf Club in Rancho Bernardo. The Canadian native recorded a 79, beating his age by seven strokes. “It’s the most effortless swing I’ve ever seen an amateur have,” said Jeff Vance, a retired teaching pro who played with Barber.

As Mike Shildt stood last in another victory line, deferring to Padres players and coaches, Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. made sure to share the love. Each star hugged the manager, as did Luis Arraez. Not a bad trio to have in your corner.

SAN DIEGO — Major League Baseball’s penalties for a failed drug test aren’t stern enough to adequately deter players’ use of banned performance-enhancing drugs, said a former World Series champion known by many San Diegans. Eric Hosmer, who retired last year and was with the Padres from 2018 through late 2022, said MLB ought to jack up the financial hit for a flunked PED test. Hosmer suggested a sharp-toothed alternative: void all guaranteed money due a suspended player.

San Diego FC deserved to lose. And lose it did. The final score Saturday in Greater Denver was Colorado Rapids 3, San Diego 2. A defender’s heavy touch here, a few sailed shots there, cost SDFC. Smart wrinkles profited the home team, which earned the three points. Let’s revisit my first measure for the San Diego soccer newbies. Are they entertaining? Once again, the answer was yes. So while the failure to get any points mattered, the performance was a success. The best entertainers?

The Padres have a sharper edge to them this year. No doubt about it. Just look at the tough-guy posters on display at Petco Park. Padres players look angry. Did someone put pebbles into their cleated shoes? Resembling fighters who step into a caged octagon, Manny Machaco, Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill stare with menace onto 19 Tony Gwynn Dr, from near a ticket booth. They glare at folks from inside ballpark elevators. Even Nick Pivetta shows a bad-boy countenance.

Theory: Houston's men basketball winning the national title would've been a good outcome for SDSU as a fellow mid-major. Thoughts?

RT @SDUTKrasovic: It's not easy to play entertaining soccer. San Diego FC is doing it. Twenty-seven games to go. https://t.co/LrKZfP9Mm7
