The race is part of the Hampshire Road Race League and drew runners from across the county – including a lively group of 24 from Alton Runners. The day started off a bit grey and chilly, but the clouds soon gave way to sunshine as runners tackled the second half of the newly-revamped course. Moving away from the usual three-lap route inside Royal Victoria Country Park, this year’s race took participants through the village of Netley Abbey, offering a more scenic and undulating challenge.

Hambledon Cricket Club hosted a charity match at Ridge Meadow in memory of Jackie Turner, who sadly passed away after a long battle with breast cancer at only 42 years of age. Ian Turner lead an XI of past Hambledon players in a T20 fixture against a Chairman’s XI selected by Mark Le-Clercq. Jackie, whose father 'Topsy' is a Hambledon legend, came from a very sporty family and represented Hampshire Women’s cricket team and played third and fourth team cricket for Hambledon.

Stevens, Merritt and Boarer beat Osgood, Thelton and Atkin 20-13. Walker, Morris and Hames beat Calfe, Baden and Osgood 21-14. Mayford Hall beat West End 71-48. Davies, Blake and Hames beat Shambrook, Shambrook and Woodley 21-14. Cousins, Bourne and Boarer beat Kneller, Davey and Woodley 15-11.

Justin Clarke was voted in as the new club chairman and Linda Tyler as ladies’ captain while Colette Grist joins the committee as welfare officer and Matt Saker as men’s captain. There was a vote of thanks to Jane Georghiou as the outgoing ladies’ captain, a position she has held for the past 30 years.

The home side were in trouble early on at 19 for two, but a magnificent 147-run partnership between Alex Wilton (110) and Shore (63) steadied the ship as the pitch flattened out and the loose balls were punished. Shore fell shortly after reaching his half-century, but Wilton kicked on and brought up his second consecutive home century to lead Petersfield to an imposing 246 for seven off their allotted 45 overs at the halfway mark.
