Around one in five staff in Stormont’s agriculture and environment department have declared an “immediate family” conflict of interest. More than 600 officials and other employees at the Department of Agriculture, the Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) registered a family-related “commercial interest” in a recent transparency exercise. The department employs about 3,000 staff.

The utility regulator for Northern Ireland has launched an investigation into NI Water, The Irish News can reveal. It follows a Stormont infrastructure committee session on March 5, in which senior NI Water official Gary Curran was asked twice whether such an investigation was already underway. Campaigners say he “dodged” the question.

Three major landowners in Northern Ireland are among those benefitting from a £68m tax break across the UK. The Co Tyrone Baronscourt Estate and two landed estates in the Newtownards Peninsula, Killyleagh Castle and Ballywalter Park, are availing of the ‘tax-exempt heritage assets scheme’. Campaigners have urged Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves to close what they have described as a tax “loophole”.
