The issue is front and center in Miami-Dade County, where Mayor Daniella Levine Cava recently vetoed a measure that would have removed flouride from the metro area’s drinking water.

    An appeals court Friday cleared the way for the demolition of the old Silver Sands motel on Key Biscayne, rejecting a challenge from a nearby condo owner who said the 14-story tower would block its views. The parcel was sold for $205 million – an island record –  but developers have said the investment in the Atlantic Ocean property will be much more. The suit involved a due-process challenge to the way the Key Biscayne Village Council approved the 301 Ocean Drive project last October.

    It cost dozens of families some sleep, but Miami-Dade School officials came to Tuesday’s Key Biscayne Council meeting to say mistakes were made that resulted in needlessly wait-listing middle-schoolers for a MAST Academy program. “There was a programmatic error, and we have since stepped in, and we have actually resolved some of the issues that exist,” said Michael Lewis, the region superintendent for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
