TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Shawnee County Board of Commissioners approved a few requests that would benefit the projects and funding of the Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Department. In February, Shawnee County Commissioners approved an initial $76,000 budget to repair some slides at the Shawnee North Aquatic Center, but crews discovered more structural issues as they started the repairs; some rusted bolts and deteriorated fiberglass.

EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) - An Emporia police officer featured in WIBW’s Salute Our Heroes for saving a life has been awarded for his bravery and service. Christine Torrens, communications manager for the City of Emporia, says Officer Martin Orozco has earned one of the highest honors of the Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police — “the Silver Award.”The award is dedicated to Kansas officers whose quick thinking, bravery, and selfless actions saved a life.

Highland Park High School partnered with Advisors Excel to hold the first alumni panel on Thursday, April 11. Friday afternoon, March 28: Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education Linda McMahon informed state education leaders, including the Kansas State Department of Education, that the department will immediately end the liquidation period of the Education Stabilization Fund.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A construction project will impact Topeka’s SW 6th Avenue for roughly a month. Starting Tuesday, April 8, the SW 6th and Oakley Ave. intersection, near Hummer Sports Park, will be closed while city crews conduct some pavement reconstruction. City of Topeka officials say this construction phase is expected to last four weeks, weather permitting. SW 6th Ave. will be reduced to one lane in both directions the eastbound lanes during that time. The detour to access Oakley Ave.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A jury has found a Topeka man guilty of attempted first-degree murder in a 2019 robbery-stabbing incident at a Kwik Shop. Anthony R. Downing has been convicted of attempted murder in the first degree, premeditated (Level 1 Felony) and criminal possession of a weapon (Level 8 Felony). The incident happened on May 8, 2019, at the Kwik Shop on the corner of SW 17th St. and SW Topeka Blvd.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County is closer to building a new playground attraction at Gage Park called an “Adventure To Sky Trail.” Commissioners approved a $1.2 million “base bid” to RCI Adventure Products for an aerial adventure trail, which will span the length of “Playland” 15 feet in the air with an enclosed net structure and slides.
