Nearly three and a half decades after receiving the death penalty for a triple murder that occurred in 1989, a Robertson County man became the first inmate to be executed by the state of Tennessee in five years. On Thursday, May 22, 75-year-old Oscar Franklin Smith, a death row inmate from Robertson County, died from an administered dose of the fatal drug pentobarbital at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville.

According to Springfield Police, officers responded to a shooting which occurred that Sunday morning just after 12:30 am on Moreland Drive. Upon arriving at the residence, they discovered between four to five vehicles had been struck by gunfire. Witnesses reported that additional gunfire was heard while officers were on site.
