A longstanding institution tasked with driving growth in North Brevard could no longer receive funding from the county after a heated debate by commissioners this Tuesday. In a 3-2 vote, the commission chose to draft a statement of legislative intent to stop all payments to the North Brevard Economic Development Zone and collect any unused funds. County commissioners will have to vote to approve the final legislative intent at a future meeting once it's drafted by county staff.

Brevard County commissioners on Tuesday voted to move forward conducting a national search to replace county manger Frank Abbate, who will be retiring in May. The board voted unanimously in favor of hiring an outside consultant to start a national search for the next county manager. Abbate, who has worked for the county for over three decades, was promoted internally to the county manager role in 2017 even after Brevard commissioners at the time had hired a firm to conduct a nationwide search.

The Palm Bay Police Department lobby was briefly evacuated due to the fire. No injuries or damages were reported. Palm Bay Police Department briefly evacuated its lobby Friday afternoon due to smoke from a nearby electrical fire. Lt. Virginia Kilmer, spokeswoman for the department, said an electrical box outside Palm Bay City Hall caught fire for an undetermined reason. Plumes of black smoke were reported in the area and could be seen up and down Port Malabar Road.
